CASNumber:3173-72-6

Hartdur 115 (1,5-Naphthalene diisocyanate, NDI), CAS 3173-72-6, is an aromatic polyisocyanate prepolymer based on toulene diisocyanate (TDI). Applications include pesticides, pharmaceutical intermediates and polyurethane elastomers. It enables the manufacturing of polyurethane elastomers with exceptional elasticity and hardness.

Naphthalene-1.5-diisocyanate (NDI) is famous with the usage in the polyurethane elastomer VULKOLLAN. It’s an essential curing agent for PU products. Unlike widely used diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and tolulene diisocyanate (TDI), NDI is with stiff structure and high melting point. NDI-based polyurethane elastomers exhibit unparalleled properties, including excellent dynamic performance, high mechanical strength, outstanding cut resistance, and exceptional resistance to abrasion and temperature. As a result, NDI-based polyurethane elastomers find wide-ranging applications in automotive shock absorbers, forklift load-bearing wheels, printing and dyeing textile rollers, rubber squeegees, bridge construction buffers, and military applications, among others. NDI-based polyurethane elastomers stand for high quality, long-lasting components. The NDI-based elastomers combine the elasticity of an ether based material with the toughness of an ester based elastomer. Those NDI-based cast PU elastomers used in the automotive/transportation industries commonly to enhancing safety, which demand for both highest mechanical and dynamic load-bearing characteristics. Johnson Group is the key player in the NDI market. Our NDI production capacity is 500 MT annually and keep expanding.

HARTDUR 115 (NDI) is pure naphthylene -1,5- diisocyanate (NDI) and is supplied in the form of fine white crystalline flakes. Its vapor pressure at room temperature is below 10-4mbar. Permissible in the air at working places according to the Federal Republic of Germany is 0.02 ppm = 0.18 mg/m3. This value is not allowed to exceed even for short periods. Being exceptionally reactive, NDI must be treated as a dangerous material and it must be handled with care. The potential risks of HARTDUR 115 (NDI) depend mainly on the extent to which isocyanate dust, vapors, or aerosols are formed during the processing of this product. The circumstances and operations in which workers may be exposed to HARTDUR 115 (NDI) in any of these forms are as follows: dust may rise from the solid material while it is being weighed or batch feeding into reaction vessels; vapors and aerosols are formed in the cross linking of hot prepolymer batches containing an excess of NDI and in the production of castings (the aerosols owe their formation to the cooling and condensation of hot isocyanate vapors).

Storage  Caution:

HARTDUR 115(NDI) is sensitive to moisture. Water reacts with all diisocyanates to form insoluble urea derivatives. HARTDUR 115(NDI) should be stored in tightly sealed containers in cool and dry conditions. After using, the lid must be sealed immediately in case of dysfunction.

NDI is a great solution for cast polyurethane elastomers to achieve superior mechanical and dynamic properties. It is used for producing superior damping elements, such as bumpers, springs, towing assisters, vibration pads and transmission components. NDI-based elastomers are also commonly applied on wheels, casters and rollers which are required for high-levelled performance, mostly used in forklifts, stacker cranes and towers. Conveyors, printing blades, URE RUB printing cylinders, halftone printing knife copiers & laser printers cleaning blades / parts and O-rings are usually made of NDI-based elastomers, too.
